Iran and Ukraine have opened our eyes to the possibilities for middle powers. We have been hiding behind the apron of the U.S. because of the belief that we couldn’t protect ourselves. That belief was probably correct twenty years ago. Now, it seems, that that strategy is no longer valid and a better strategy has presented itself. We have the capacity and the capability to protect ourselves collectively and have a ransom at our fingertips to put pressure on a superpower not to take that step. I’m sure China has been looking at Iran and realising the there is a strategic weakness that I don’t think they can fully cover.
