Nicely written Adam. The US are currently generating Subs at 1.2 per year, below the 2 expected. Taking 3-5 will deplete the stocks further. When will the 3 enter Australian service? Would it have been a better option bringing the Japanese into the agreement and buying Submarines from them? Less crew, easier to maintain- just as a stop gap until the AUKUS Subs are available?
The Nuclear issue hasn’t been debated here in Australia and one election can change it all. The Japanese subs being non-nuclear fits into the Australian Industry, now, while we build the Nuclear capable assets for the future. Is it a case the US needed a deep port now? North Korea and the Chinese are making Guam nervous?
The Libs are fully on board. AUKUS started under Scmo. Dutton is more gunho than Albo. Elections only matter if an alternative is presented. The greens might get a bump but it won't change a thing.

JPN boats are not nuclear. That option for AUS was explored in the past. As for US production rates AUS will be offered used boats.
